Key Answers, Explanations, Notes, and Concepts

1. The preparation of good quality lumber includes several stages. When it is dried, the process involved is?

a. seasoning
b. staining
c. lumbering
d. logging

Answer: a. seasoning

seasoning- is the process of drying timber to remove the bound moisture contained in walls of the wood cells to produce seasoned timber. Seasoning can be achieved in a number of ways, but the aim is to remove water at a uniform rate through the piece to prevent damage to the wood during drying (seasoning degrade).

staining- is a type of finish that is applied to wood to alter its appearance. It may change the color, enhance the. grain or protect the wood from damage. A stain is applied to wood during the finishing process. It is pigmented to change the color of the wood, and there are several colors of stains available.

lumbering- is defined as cutting down trees and turning them into pieces of wood used for building. An example of lumbering is using a chain saw to cut down trees which will eventually be made into 2x4s.

logging- is the process of cutting, processing, and moving trees to a location for transport. It may include skidding, on-site processing, and loading of trees or logs onto trucks or skeleton cars.

2. The smallest division of the metric scale that you can find in the steel rule is ________.
a. decimeter
b. centimeter
c. millimeter
d. meter

Answer: c. millimeter

3. What is the conversion equivalent of one inch to centimeters?
a. 25.4
b. 2.54
c. 0.254
d. 0.0254

Answer: b. 2.54

4. Find the total number of board feet of six pieces of lumber with a dimension of 2" x 4" x 12'.
a. 8 bd. ft.
b. 96 bd. ft.
c. 48 bd. ft.
d. 480 bd. ft.

Answer: c. 48 bd. ft.

Always get the product of all dimensions, then divide by 12(constant) multiply to the total number of woods.

5. A seasoned lumber is ideal for carpentry works. Which among the following is best to use?
a. Sun dried
b. Kiln dried
c. Air dried
d. Natural dried

Answer: b. Kiln dried

Sun dried- wood naturally represents the removal of water from wood wdirectly from the heat of the sun.

Kiln dried- process of artificial or 'oven' drying consists basically of introducing heat. This may be directly, using natural gas and/or electricity or indirectly, through steam-heated heat exchangers.

Air dried-  is the drying of timber by exposing it to the air. The technique of air drying consists mainly of making a stack of sawn timber (with the layers of boards separated by stickers) on raised foundations, in a clean, cool, dry and shady place.

Natural dried-  wood naturally represents the removal of water from wood with the help of natural energy sources, for example the sun and wind. It is the oldest drying process of wood.

6. There are numerous kinds of saw. When sawing along the grain of wood, you need a ________.
a. back saw
b. cross cut saw
c. rip saw
d. circular saw

Answer: c. rip saw

back saw- is any hand saw which has a stiffening rib on the edge opposite the cutting edge, enabling better control and more precise cutting than with other types of saws. Backsaws are normally used in woodworking for precise work, such as cutting dovetails, mitres, or tenons in cabinetry and joinery.

cross cut saw- is any saw designed for cutting wood perpendicular to (across) the wood grain. Crosscut saws may be small or large, with small teeth close together for fine work like woodworking or large for coarse work like log bucking, and can be a hand tool or power tool.

rip saw- Rip cut comes from rip: to split or saw timber in the direction of the grain, and cut: to divide with a sharp-edged instrument.

circular saw- is perhaps the most commonly used saw today, used extensively in both professional construction projects and DIY home improvement. This power tool uses a round metal blade edged with sharp teeth to cut an array of material such as woods, metals, cement block, brick, fiberglass, plastics and slate.

7. In measuring cylindrical object, what is the appropriate tool to be used?
a. ruler
b. caliper
c. pull-push rule
d. meter stick

Answer: b. caliper

ruler

caliper

pull-push rule

meter stick

8. Fastening materials are important in woodworks. The most common of these materials is ________.

a. dowel
b. bolts
c. screw
d. nails

Answer: d. nails

A fastener is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together. In general, fasteners are used to create non-permanent joints; that is, joints that can be removed or dismantled without damaging the joining components.

9. A wood product made of three or more veneer slice that are laid one upon the other and bonded with glue or synthetic resin is ________.
a. Pressed wood
b. Plywood
c. Particle board
d. Soft wood

Answer: b. Plywood

10. Which of the following tools is used in checking the squareness of the corners and flatness of a surface?
a. Straightedge
b. Steel square
c. Sliding T-bevel
d. Try square

Answer: b. Steel square

Straightedge- a bar with one accurately straight edge, used for testing whether something else is straight.

Steel square-
is a tool used in carpentry. Carpenters use various tools to lay out structures that are square (that is, built at accurately measured right angles), many of which are made of steel, but the name steel square refers to a specific long-armed square that has additional uses for measurement, especially of various angles

Sliding T-bevel-
also known as a bevel gauge or false square is an adjustable gauge for setting and transferring angles.

Try square- there is no such
