Key Answers, Explanations, Notes, and Concepts

41) In which type of pipes does portable water travel
a. ABS pipes
b. Galvanized pipes
c. Cast iron pipes
d. PVC pipes (orange)

Answer: b. Galvanized pipes

ABS pipes- It's often the choice of plumbers for use in drain, waste, and vent piping systems. You'll also find that ABS pipe is frequently used in sewer systems for drainage and as electrical insulation.

Galvanized pipes- are steel pipes that have been dipped in a protective zinc coating to prevent corrosion and rust. Galvanized piping was commonly installed in homes built before 1960. When it was invented, galvanized pipe was an alternative to lead pipe for water supply lines.
Cast iron pipes- used in underground sewage. Nowadays, it can still be found in homes and drainage systems all around the city. In the right conditions, these can last from 80 to 100 years.
PVC pipes (orange)- What is orange tubing used for?
It is ideal for use in pneumatic , drain piping, lab use and chemical transfer applications which require an inexpensive tubing. Hofmann Polyethylene Tubing is highly-resistant to stress cracking from chemicals, aging and ultraviolet exposure. For use with barb-type, push-to-connect or compression type fittings.
Red- Electric power lines, cables, conduit, and lighting cables
Yellow- Natural gas, oil, steam, petroleum, or other gaseous or flammable materials
Green- Sanitary sewers and drain lines
Orange- Telecommunication, alarm or signal lines, cables, or conduits
Blue- Potable water

42) If your water system has leak, where can you shut off the flow of water?
a. Gate valve
b. Globe valve
c. Check valve
d. Angle valve

Answer: a. Gate valve

Gate valve- is generally used to completely shut off fluid flow or, in the fully open position, provide full flow in a pipeline. Thus it is used either in the fully closed or fully open positions. A gate valve consists of a valve body, seat and disc, a spindle, gland, and a wheel for operating the valve.
Globe valve are used to open, close, and regulate the flow of fluids. Unlike ball valves and gate valves, globe valves are designed to modulate and throttle water flow. The spherical valve of the body (hence the name “globe”) houses a stationary ring seat.

It may also be used sometime as a pressure relief valve or as a check valve.
Check valve- are generally installed in pipelines to prevent backflow. A check valve is basically a one-way valve, in which the flow can run freely one way, but if the flow turns the valve will close to protect the piping, other valves, pumps etc.

Angle valve- are located on the water supply lines of toilets, plumbing fixtures and appliances. A quarter turn of the handle on an angle valve will quickly shut off the water being supplied to a fixture and help prevent an overflow.

43) A plumber wants to install a liquid seal to prevent sewer gasses from entering the building. What device is needed?
a. Union
b. Trap
c. Backflow preventer
d. Pump

Answer: b. Trap

Union- is a type of fitting equipment designed in such a way to unite two pipes which can be detached without causing any deformation to the pipes.

Trap- is to create a barrier in the drainpipe that prevents sewer gas from rising back up through the drain and into the house. Sewer gas naturally rises, and it would drift up into living spaces through drains unless blocked.

Backflow preventer- is designed to prevent the water in your main water supply lines from flowing in a reverse direction. The valve will distribute the sanitary water from the main supply pipes to the water lines beneath your foundation.
Pump- is to slow down the water and increase the pressure. The pumped water–new water that's drawn from the well by the suction at the jet–then combines with the drive water to discharge into the plumbing system at high pressure

44) A plumber wants to shut off the flow of water just 90 degrees turn. Which valve is appropriate?
a. Gate valve
b. Globe valve
c. Check valve
d. Angle valve

45) What do you call those flexible waterproof ribbon for covering threaded pipes joints to prevent leakage?
a. Rubber bond
b. Masking tape
c. Teflon tape
d. Tape

Answer: c. Teflon tape

Rubber bond-

Masking tape-
Teflon tape- Teflon tape or thread sealant is a simple yet effective material found in tradie toolkits worldwide. Also known generically as PTFE tape, it's generally used as a sealant and lubricating material, perfect for installing fittings in the kitchen and bathroom.
Tape-

46) If the end of a PVC pipe is fitted with a male adopter, what fitting will be used to stop the flow of the water?
a. Elbow
b. Coupling
c. Cap
d. Plug

Answer: c. Cap

Elbow- is installed between two lengths of pipe (or tubing) to allow a change of direction, usually a 90° or 45° angle; 22.5° elbows are also available.

Coupling-slip over the outside of two pipes to connect them, usually permanently.
Cap- (Female) Pipe caps act as protective device and are designed to protect pipe ends of various shapes. The main purpose of using pipe caps is to waterproof the connections. They are also used to close the the ends of hydraulic or pneumatic pipes and tubes.

Plug- (Maale) as cap end of fractional tubes used in a large number of industries. These pipe plugs are designed to insert into the end of tubing to dead-end the flow.

47) How many PVC pipes can be installed in a 7.50 meter distance?
a. 2 pcs.
b. 2.5 pcs.
c. 3 pcs.
d. 3.5 pcs.

Answer: b. 2.5 pcs.

3.0 m is the standard length of a PVC pipe needed from your house to the main supply

48) If the end of the PVC pipe is fitted with a female adopter, what fitting will be used to stop the flow of the water?
a. Elbow
b. Coupling
c. Cap
d. Plug

49) A plumber wants to connect two length of pipes. Which fitting is necessary?
a. Coupling
b. Elbow
c. Tee
d. Pipe wrench

Answer: a. Coupling

Coupling-slip over the outside of two pipes to connect them, usually permanently.
Elbow- is installed between two lengths of pipe (or tubing) to allow a change of direction, usually a 90° or 45° angle; 22.5° elbows are also available.
Tee- three pipes/  is used to combine or divide fluid flow. Tees can connect pipes of different diameters or change the direction of a pipe run, or both. Available in a variety of materials, sizes and finishes, they may also be used to transport two-fluid mixtures.

Pipe wrench- s used to hold or turn pipes or circular bars.

50) If there is leaking in the water supply of lavatory, sink, and water closet, which valve are you going to shut off?
a. Gate valve
b. Globe valve
c. Check valve
d. Angle valve

Answer: a.

Gate valves got their name from the closure element sliding into the flow stream to provide shutoff and, therefore, acting like a gate.
Globe valve are used to open, close, and regulate the flow of fluids. Unlike ball valves and gate valves, globe valves are designed to modulate and throttle water flow. The spherical valve of the body (hence the name “globe”) houses a stationary ring seat.
