Key Answers, Explanations, Notes, and Concepts

41) Which lumber has wood fibers that are packed closely together? a. Edge-grain b. Angle-grain c. Flat-grain d. Close-grain

Answer: d. Close-grain
Edge-grain- a reference to a particular visible pattern on the surface of a wood countertop that indicates it has been constructed by exposing the staves of the boards used

Angle-grain- forming an angle of 45” or more with the wide faces is often described as edge-grain, vertical grain or rift-sawn in softwoods. In hardwoods, this angel of sawing is often referred to as quarter-sawn or comb-grained.
Flat-grain- a grain in lumber parallel or nearly parallel with the face of the piece (as of veneering stock) that is produced by sawing nearly at right angles to the annual rings.
Close-grain- refers to fine texture, with small, closely spaced pores, such as cherry. Open grain refers to coarse texture, with larger, open pores, such as oak.
42) Which lumber has wood fiber that do not run parallel to the board? a. Edge-grain b. Cross-grain c. Flat-grain d. Close-grain

Answer: b. Cross-grain

Cross-grain- 1 : a grain running transversely to the regular grain or not parallel to the long axis of the piece (as in certain wood) 2 : interweaving grain in lumber 43) A carpenter makes a picture frame. Which type of joint is appropriate? a. Dado joint b. Tenon joint c. Lap joint d. Miter joint

Answer: d. Miter joint

Dado joint- also sometimes referred to as a housing joint, is a very strong type of carpentry joint commonly across a variety of woodworking projects and especially cabinets and shelving.

Tenon joint- connects two pieces of wood or other material. Woodworkers around the world have used it for thousands of years to join pieces of wood, mainly when the adjoining pieces connect at right angles.

Lap joint- falls into the category of halving joints – where two halves make a whole. It is a relatively easy joint to cut and a great learning joint if you are just getting going in woodwork. While not particularly strong, lap joints are simple joints you can use to make picture frames and mirrors

Miter joint-
connects two 45 degree angled pieces of wood together at a 90-degree angle. They are most commonly used in making frames, crown molding, furniture, cabinets, doors, windows, boxes, and joining architraves.

44) A carpenter fixes shelves of a bookcase. Which type of joint is appropriate? a. Dado joint b. Mortise and Tenon joint c. Lap joint d. Miter joint

Answer: a. Dado joint
45) In which wood joint is the end of one member inserted to hole of the other member? a. Dado joint b. Mortise and Tenon joint c. Lap joint d. Miter joint

Answer: b. Mortise and Tenon joint 46) Which wood joint describes the technique for joining two pieces by putting one side over the other? a. Dado joint b. Butt joint c. Lap joint d. Miter joint

Answer: c. Lap joint

Butt joint- is a technique in which two pieces of material are joined by simply placing their ends together without any special shaping.

47) Which wood joint describes the technique for joining two pieces by putting one end over the other? a. Dado joint b. Butt joint c. Lap joint d. Miter joint

Answer: b. Butt joint 48) A carpenter wants to make a dining table. Which joint is appropriate to become rigid and durable? a. Miter joint b. Mortise and Tenon joint c. Dado joint d. Butt joint

Answer: b. Mortise and Tenon joint 49) Which is the simplest type of wood joint? a. Dado joint b. Butt joint c. Lap joint d. Miter joint

Answer: b. Butt joint 50) Which wood joint describes the technique for joining two pieces by cutting of 45 degrees angle? a. Rabbet joint b. Butt joint c. Lap joint d. Miter joint

Answer: d. Miter joint

Rabbet joint- is a recess cut into the edge of a workpiece. The piece that extrudes is called the tongue. A rabbet joint is the result of joining a rabbet to another piece of wood, typically to construct shelving and cabinet boxes.
